The first international General Directory for Catechesis was published in 1971, following a prescription by the Second Vatican Council. Since then, considerable attention has been devoted to catechesis in all parts of the world. Numerous documents related to the subject were published, amongst them Evangelii Nuntiandi, Catechesi Tradendae, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This 1997 edition of the General Directory for Catechesis reflects this evolution and takes into account the new situations and needs. Episcopal Conferences, several experts and catechetical institutes and centres were involved in the preparation of this revised foundational document.
